July 1, 2006
HAPPY BIRTHDAY CANADA !!!
Let’s quickly get yesterday’s definitions taken care of:aubade \oh-BAHD\,
noun: A song or poem greeting the dawn; also, a composition suggestive of morning.
quondam \KWAHN-duhm; KWAHN-dam\,
adjective: Having been formerly; former; sometime.
Now, to mark the 139 anniversary of Canada becoming a country, I am giving everyone the gift of a little joke which is compliments of Uncle Garth:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Scenario:
You are driving in a car at a constant speed. On your left side is a valley and on your right side is a fire engine traveling at the same speed as you. In front of you is a galloping pig which is the same size as your car and you cannot overtake it. Behind you is a helicopter flying at ground level. Both the giant pig and the helicopter are also traveling at the same speed as you.
What must you do to safely get out of this highly dangerous situation?
Have a think about it, then scroll down for the solution

Before we headed out from Kewaunee we took full advantage of the wireless access they
provided there by having everyone check their email and get their blogs updated. We then stopped for a little walk around the harbour in this lovely little town on the lake and the kids found a skateboard park to fool around in.
Then we set off for a trip down to, and right on past, Milwaukee and on to Chicago. Our first leg, down Highway 42 along the coast was absolutely beautiful with lots of gorgeous views of Lake Michigan all the way along through Two Rivers followed by a short drive through Manitowoc past what appeared to be one of the most posh sections of town. After that, unfortunately, it was the freeway the rest of the way.Today also marked the first time we executed the “lunch in the MoHo on the go” routine. Perhaps not the safest of moves, and perhaps not the most legal of actions, but definitely the most efficient way to grab lunch while traveling.
Not long after Milwaukee, we bid farewell to Wisconsin and crossed into the “Land of Lincoln” then made our way down to America’s third largest city, Chicago. Driving through a city of this size under the best of conditions can be a little harrowing but try doing it with a vehicle that stretches back about 50 feet and it can be intimidating. Luckily it was a Saturday. At one point I had to pull a two-lane-change-at-the-same-time to catch a left-lane exit. That was … exciting.
By the way, we now know why they call it the windy city. Our trip down was so windy that I felt
like I was driving a sail down the highway. If you tried to determine our direction solely by the angle of the steering wheel, you’d swear we were driving in circles! But we made it to our friend’s place safe and sound. Jim and Susan were in the middle of having a big party when we arrived and most of Susan’s family, as well as many neighbours, were in attendance throughout the
afternoon and evening. It appeared a good time was had by all and we meet some interesting new people. Even better was the fact that we were able to park the MoHo on the street in front of Jim’s place and … it is even close to being level too! Always a bonus when it comes to sleeping or walking in the
MoHo. Otherwise you get the “crazy kitchen” effect. Anyone who has ever been to the Ottawa Science and Technology Museum will understand what I am talking about. We then settled in for a rather warm night since our air conditioning unit kept tripping Jim’s breaker. To give you an idea of how warm it was, I had to drink at least 3 more beers than normal to ensure I was properly hydrated (check the videos). Just for the record, I did break out the Crown Royal in an effort to honour our mutual country of origin.
Now I must get going so we can start our big day of festivities at the “Taste of Chicago” event in the city. Stay tuned for more info on that.
