Aug 5 – Mount Revelstoke (noun not verb)

Aug 5, 2006

After seeing so many incredible things that were built between 80 and 120 years ago, (Banff Springs Hotel, Steam engines, Cross country railways and tunnels through the Rocky Mountains, Electricity generating dams, Grandious legislative buildings, etc.) it makes me wonder, what cool and amazing things has humanity done in the last 40 years, other than man landing on the moon, where future generations will say, “How were they able to do that with the limited resources they had available to them back then?” Perhaps this trip will be remembered that way?

We arrived in Revelstoke in the late afternoon yesterday and managed to find a campsite, just barely. It was the last site available in the entire campground and it was the Friday night of a long weekend. The campground, like just about anything in Revelstoke, was surrounded by mountains. However, it was a lovely treed location which, unfortunately, blocked our view of much of the beauty of the Rockies all around us. You can’t have everything I guess. One other thing that we did get was another friend for Morgan. There was a family from Montreal camping beside us and Morgan and Maxim got along immediately. Half the fun of traveling is the people you meet.

The one and only item on our agenda today is to climb to the summit of Mount Revelstoke today. It is over 6300 feet high so in order to minimize the chance of injury, we donned our hiking gear and … jumped in the car and drove up! There is a 26 km road that zigzags up to within a kilometer of the peak. You can then ascend the rest on foot and there are plenty of hiking trails all around the peak which give you endless opportunities to bathe yourself in amazing scenery of the Revelstoke Valley and the Columbia River. The views from Mount Revelstoke did not disappoint. It was a gorgeous sunny day and you could clearly see the stunning beauty and majestic grandeur of the Rockies in all directions. After our hike around the top of Mount Revelstoke A-P turned to me and said, “The Rocky Mountains … they ROCK!” And that pretty much sums up our day at the top of the world. I have included a bunch of photos this time as they provide incontrovertible evidence of what we saw but I must admit they simply can’t capture the feeling you get when you are there in person.

Today’s word:

incontrovertible \in-kon-truh-VUR-tuh-buhl\, adjective:Too clear or certain to admit of dispute; indisputable; unquestionable.

Dear biggest fan (aka Alain),
More content is on its way. We are only slowed down when we lack access to the internet. Don't go away!
