Sept 2 – Out of the Mountains but Still Rocky?

Sept 2, 2006

Finally, a slow-blog day or a “slog” day, if you will. This is probably a good time to tell you about a little discussion Morgan and I had back on the Canadian prairies which I neglected to include up until now. As we were driving along the Trans Canada highway outside of Winnipeg we came across some road work and we saw some big machinery working there, including an earthmover. Those are those specialized contraptions that are designed for the single purpose of scraping up huge amounts of earth from one location into their massive, rear, trailer-like container only to be transported to somewhere else and be dropped off again. It basically just redistributes dirt from one spot to another. Anyway, after I had pointed out the earthmovers on our way by, Morgan said to me, “Dad, you know, when you used to tell us to look at earthmovers, I always thought you were just making it up.” Well I must say that comment caught me by surprise and he had me wondering what would cause him to think that. So I asked him what he meant by this and he replied, “Well, even when I was a little kid I didn’t think that it was possible that a vehicle could exist that would be big enough and strong enough to actually move the earth.” Ok … I see where you are coming from now. And you make a good point, Morgan. The scary part is that this actually reminds me of me when I was a kid.

Of course we woke to another beautiful sunny day. We packed our stuff and left our campsite only to park in the office parking lot for a few more hours. No, the MoHo was fine. We did this because we needed to upload some blog entries and check our email and the wireless signal only worked in, or close to, their lounge. So we hung out there until 2:00(!) and then we finally hit the road. A-P also got a chance to practice a little piano while we were there so that was an added bonus. Once we got on the road it was interesting to see that as we drove the 5 kms (3 miles) to the coast we watched the fog become thicker and thicker. Then as we drove down those same picturesque byways we had enjoyed for the last two days we found that we were robbed of the gorgeous sparkling ocean views that we had been reveling in just yesterday. However, once we pointed west toward I-5 we very quickly got our beautiful sunny day back again. Then it was an uneventful trip to our next stop at the Hi-Way Haven RV park in Sutherlin, OR. This turned out to be an extremely well kept park which just happened to be built on a retired drive-in location. Since the screen was still standing when the current owner took over the RV park last year, he decided to start showing movies at the park. This RV park/Drive-In has sui generis written all over it. So once a week on Saturday nights they screen a movie for the people staying there. Well guess what night we arrived? We quickly got settled in to our site, grabbed some dinner and we were off to the drive-in to see “Rocky”. Ok, that may not be my first pick for movies but, on the positive side, I just happen to be one of the 12 people over the age of 30 who have never seen that movie, so at least it would be something new. And besides, it is kind of cool to be able to watch pretty much any drive-in movie from the comfort of your own MoHo living room! How did I like the movie? Well, now there are only 11 people over 30 who have not seen Rocky. Anyway, the kids thought it was great and we have decided that we now have to take the kids to a drive-in again sometime on our trip.

Today’s word:

sui generis \soo-eye-JEN-ur-us; soo-ee-\, adjective:
Being the only example of its kind; constituting a class of its own; unique.
