Sept 3 – Crater Lake

Sept 3, 2006

The focus for today is Crater Lake. Of course, we had a crystal clear, blue sky awaiting us as we set out. This location has been recommended to us by a few different people whom we have met during our travels. Most recently it was Tracy and Tony in Seattle. We actually picked the campground based on the fact that it is located reasonably close to Crater Lake but also minimizes our requirement to deal with mountainous terrain in the MoHo. We started with a two-hour drive to Crater Lake so we could experience it live and in person. The drive there was wonderful … great scenic hills and rivers along a smooth and winding road. Wonderful, that is, if you are driving a car rather than a MoHo. When we finally arrived at Crater Lake National Park there was still about a 10 mile (16 km) drive up to the lip. The most amazing part has got to be that first glimpse this incredible volcanic spectacle. Even 10-year-old Morgan was just blown away by the vivid beauty and overwhelming proportions of it all. We then spent the next 4 hours soaking it all in from every conceivable angle and available altitude with the exception of a boat-level tour … they were all sold out by the time we arrived. We made the 50 mile (80 km) trip all the way around the edge of the crater to get the full effect. We even hiked to the top of Watchman mountain to see it all from the highest peak on the rim. It is one fabulous sight and, did I mention that we had a golden, cloudless, sunny day to check it all out? Then it was my turn to drive on the way back (Chantal had the honours on our way there) and that too was a blast. Once we get the bikes off the Matrix’s roof, you are able to have quite a bit of fun with that little machine. When we arrived back at the MoHo we were thinking of possibly taking advantage of the free movie rentals (that phrase always makes me scratch my head a bit) that the RV park also provides. But that did not take place because it turns out that they were having a special Drive-In theatre night on Sunday and Monday for the Labour Day weekend. The kids thought this was great, even if the movie showing was MXP, Most Extreme Primate. We made some popcorn and drove our car the 100 yards to prepare for the show. Chantal and I actually just brought lawn chairs but the kids wanted to watch it from inside the car … fair enough. When we were over there we found out the real story behind the extra movies. It turns out that there are not a lot of kids staying at this RV park normally. After the projectionist saw our kids there last night, he asked the owner if it was ok to do movies a couple more nights and he got the thumbs up. He was getting a little worried when he didn’t see us at our campsite all day but he was happy to see us arrive in the nick of time that evening. The movie may not have been my favorite but the kids loved it. And I would posit that you can’t help but enjoy at least some of a movie with a goofy chimpanzee in it, eh? Besides, we were allowed to bring along our own beverages so that certainly improved the quality of the movie right there. Another good yet tiring day.

Today’s word:

posit \POZ-it\, transitive verb:
1. To assume as real or conceded.
2. To propose as an explanation; to suggest.
3. To dispose or set firmly or fixedly.
