Oct 7 – Family Friendly Tucson?

Oct 7 , 2006

Today started off a little different than normal. I looked out the window to see a beautiful sunrise … over Walmart! Oh, that’s right, we are camping in a parking lot in Phoenix. We got up fairly early and prepared to make our way to Tucson. We happened to be listening to the Beatles a few days earlier and when I heard the song Get Back I realized that I had forgotten that there is a line in the song that mentions Tucson.

JoJo was a man who thought he was a loner
But he knew it wouldn’t last
JoJo left his home in Tuscon, Arizona
For some Californa grass

Hmmmm. I wonder why Arizona is such a popular subject with rock bands? Food for thought. On our trip down we passed a place that I had heard about and was even depicted in a movie. The airplane graveyard. It is the place where airlines all over the world leave their airplanes that are being retired. Bizarre but apparently true. If anyone out there knows more about this, do tell. Anyway, we were looking for campgound in Tuscon. It turns out that least expensive options were in less than ideal part of town. They we saw a billboard for an RV park that was advertising that it was “Vote best RV park in Nation”. That is a pretty bold statement. It must be a nice place so we thought we’d give it a try. We found it, parked the MoHo, and we all entered the office. Tthere was an older woman behind the counter and she asked us how she could help. We told her we were looking for a campsite for two nights. You should have seen her face as she looked over our shoulders at the kids in behind. There was a look of horror. She turned back to us and said that we could stay here but it is an adult campground. By the bewildered looks on our faces she knew she had to explain. She said that the children would not be able to use any of the facilities unless it was visiting hours. The rest of the time they would have to stay in the motorhome! Chantal and I mulled this interesting new concept over for a bit … just kidding! When we indicated that this would not work so well for us, she said that there was another campground close by that is “family-friendly”. Interesting term. So does that mean that this campground was “family-hostile”? It seemed to me after this incident that perhaps their claim of being “Best in Nation” was somewhat supposititious.
So off we went to the recommended campground, which turned out to be very nice AND they even gave us a discount which was normally not available at this time of year … just because we were from Canada! After getting parked, unpacked, and set up we decided to go to Old Tucson. This is a place that is set up like the old western towns you see in movies. As a matter of fact, you may have seen it in a number of movies as they do use this place as a set periodically. The movie, Tomestone, with Kurt Russell and Val Kilmer, was filmed here in part in 1994. We arrived fairly late but we did have time to catch a show, go through a “scary” tour of an old mine, and catch a gun fight out in the main square. Then it was back to the MoHo for dinner and a movie. Tonight’s selection … Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. I was not looking forward to seeing this movie but I must admit, I had a great time watching it … very goofy. And if you like Johnny Depp, you’ll like him in this roll.

Today’s word:

supposititious \suh-poz-uh-TISH-uhs\, adjective:1. Fraudulently substituted for something else; not being what it purports to be; not genuine; spurious; counterfeit.2. Hypothetical; supposed.
