Sept 30 - Leaving Las Vegas
Talk about going from one end of the spectrum to the other ... today we were heading from Vegas in search of Zion National Park. We were not unhappy about leaving the
gambling capital of the US behind. It really isn’t our kind of town. We set out thinking that we had a relatively short drive ahead of us. It started with a climb upward out of Vegas. A-P commented that perhaps they located Vegas in a place surrounded by mountains in order make it as difficult to leave as possible. It is an interesting theory, eh? Then later on we passed a sign that said “Carp,
Elgin”. For a second there we thought we were back home. But a quick scan of the desert horizon put those thoughts to rest. As a matter of fact, it was so flat and barren that we were able to see an entire train that was
traveling in the same direction as us off in the distance. A little later after that we did something I didn’t think I would be able to do in the MoHo in a single day. We drove clear across Arizona from one border to the other! It’s true. We crossed into AZ via the
western border and exited the state via the northern border into Utah. Ok, it was only a 30 mile (50 km) trip but technically it was border to border, right?
Actually, that 30 mile stretch, which cuts across the top left corner of Arizona, was one of the most picturesque drives on our trip. The highway winds around and through some magnificently beautiful and rugged mountains. It is strange in as much as, it seems to begin as soon as you enter AZ, and then end just before you get to Utah. The campground
we had booked was just north of St. George, which is just above the southern border of Utah. Our somewhat improvident plan was to stay put for a couple of days and simply drive the Matrix to Zion and then to Bryce the following day. Had I put a little more thought into this I may have selected a campground in between the two sites as that would surely have saved some travel time. However, on the plus side, our campground had both a pool and a hot tub and a shuffleboard. I’ll let you guess which one of those three was of most interest to me.
Today’s word:
improvident \im-PROV-uh-duhnt; -dent\, adjective:Lacking foresight or forethought; not foreseeing or providing for the future; negligent or thoughtless.
