Nov 1 – From Pacific to Atlantic

Nov 1, 2006

It was sad to leave Carrabelle on such a warm, cloudless, sunny day. For the last many weeks we have been slowly making our way to Orlando to visit Mickey and his friends. When we caught a glimpse of the ocean it was hard to believe that we had just driven the MoHo all the way from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean since we left San Deigo. Today’s leg of the trip took us to St. Augustine, Florida, which is on the Atlantic coast just south of Jacksonville. Our drive was uneventful and we squeezed in a MoHo lunch along the way. The good weather followed us all the way to Jacksonville where we found a sky full of clouds. It wasn’t long before we had the wipers on. We pulled into our campground on A1A a few minutes later. After got checked in we had to unhook the car before heading into the campground to park at our site. While unhooking the car, two people rode in on their bikes all loaded down with packs. We got talking with this couple and found out that they had ridden their bikes all the way from Michigan! They left on their tour on Sept 17th so they had only taken 6 weeks to make it to Florida. Not too shabby, eh? They said that they were averaging about 60 miles (100 km) per day. I asked what part was the most difficult so far and they immediately said the hills through Pennsylvania. To tackle the hills they said that they would basically get into first gear and just pedal inexorably, cursing much of the way. Sounds like the way I might do it. It turns out that they were not avid cyclists at all before this trip. One of them had landed a new job in Tampa Bay and they both ended up having about two months off before the new job started so they said, “Hey, what cool thing should we do with this time?” I looked at them, with their cycling gear on, standing there in the light rain with all their worldly possessions packed onto their bikes, and I told them that their adventure makes our trip look pretty tame. The funny thing is that after they took a look at the MoHo with the Matrix attached behind and our two kids in tow, they replied that they thought we were the adventurous ones. I guess things can appear very different depending on your perspective. As we made our way to our campsite we found out what a gorgeous campground this is. All of the sites were completely secluded from the others by virtue of the thick, tropical foliage that was everywhere. As a matter of fact, the road we took to get to our section of the park was completely covered over with tree branches so that it felt like you were driving through a tunnel. Very cool. I think we are going to like it here … especially with the beach and the ocean right across the street.

Today’s word:

inexorable \in-EK-sur-uh-bul; in-EKS-ruh-bul\, adjective: adverb is inexorably
Not to be persuaded or moved by entreaty or prayer; firm; determined; unyielding; unchangeable; inflexible; relentless.
