Nov 2 – On The Beach

Nov 2, 2006

We listened to the weather forecast for the next few days this morning and it wasn’t exactly what we wanted to hear. On the bright side, from the sounds of it, today was likely the best day to spend frolicking on the beach. So that is exactly what we did. Our campground was just across the street from the beach so it was only a short, two-minute walk with our beach chairs and towels before we could relax and soak up the sun and surf. We could not believe the sand here. It was wonderfully soft but, at the same time, also rather coarse. Is that even possible? Upon closer inspection, it appeared to be made up of about 50% partially crushed sea shells. The further you ventured into the water, the higher the percentage of crushed sea shells in the sand. And speaking of sea shells, they were strewn all over the beach. It was a kid’s dream come true. Both Morgan and André-Paul immediately started to collect the best shells they could find to add to the other tchotchke they have already collected during our trip. The ocean was also providing some good-sized waves while the tide was coming in and this allowed the kids an opportunity to try to grab the bigger shells that the waves were tossing around as they crashed on the beach. I uploaded a video of A-P searching for shells in the waves if you care to take a peek. Once I had determined that the water was warm enough for me, I ventured in further to see if it was safe to take the kids out into the bigger waves. Everything looked fine so the kids and I immersed ourselves in the “big boys” where we jumped around and generally had the kind of fun time you are supposed to have when you are in Florida. Meanwhile, back home in Canada, it was gratifying to find out that it was actually snowing. For some reason, knowing that seemed to make everything seem just a little bit better. Unfortunately, I guess that is the weather that we can look forward to in just another few weeks. So Florida had better provide some good, hot, sweaty weather in the meantime! After spending most of the day at the beach, we stopped by the pool and spa to warm up a little. It seemed that the sinking evening temperature and the increasing wind were conspiring to cool things off more than I would like. Nothing that some hot bubbling water couldn’t cure. I must admit that slipping into a hot tub to warm up has got to be one of life’s simple pleasures. Maybe that will be the next item on the home improvement list … right after we recover from the financial impact from this trip … maybe 2010?

Today’s word:

tchotchke \CHOCH-kuh\, noun:
A trinket; a knickknack.
