Oct 15 – Austin-tatious

Oct 15, 2006

We woke to a lazy, overcast Sunday here in Austin. Over breakfast we discussed what we might do today and we settled on taking up Ian and Kristi on their offer to give us a driving and walking tour of the city. We found out that the name of the river running through Austin is the Colorado River. Not THE Colorado river but another river called the Colorado. However, nobody refers to it as that. That’s because they installed a couple of dams on the river and the result was a river that was transformed into a couple of lakes. There, that wasn’t too confusing now was it? We checked out the area around Lake Austin where you can find lots of very nice housing. Then we parked and took a walk along the biking trail by Town lake. On our way we saw a game of kayak basketball taking place. Got you curious, check the photo. We then breezed through downtown to see the State Capital building among others. Then we popped by Mayfield Park and Reserve and go a chance to see some Peacocks live and in person. Although we didn’t see them doing the NBC thing, they were cool to look at none the less. And appropriately enough, after that we returned home for a dinner that might just have included a distant cousin of theirs. That’s because all of us Canadians had not yet had a chance to celebrate Canadian Thanksgiving. Yup, Ian and Kristi are transplanted Canucks. We were only a week late but we figured that this would help erase our holiday privation. And I must say, the turkey was quite delicious, compliments of Kristi and Chantal’s prowess in the kitchen. This lovely dinner was followed by the traditional Thanksgiving dessert, ice cream and M&Ms with peanuts!

Today’s word:

privation \pry-VAY-shun\, noun:
1. An act or instance of depriving.
2. The state of being deprived of something, especially of something required or desired; destitution; need.
