Oct 18 – An Electric Breakthrough

Oct 18, 2006

We had to bid so long to Ian, Kristi ... and Nitro, I mean, Nifty in Austin and a hello to Houston today. Ian got us all set up with vital supplies for our trip including bicycle chain oil and lens cleaning paper before heading off to work and hoping that I wouldn't forget to lock his house when we left. We made our way out of Austin successfully and once underway we found out that our fridge doesn’t work when we are driving without the battery power which is not functioning properly. That’s not good. Especially with the temperatures that Houston was serving up. We made pretty good time and as we were easing eastward through the eastern suburbs on I-10 we happened to spot a rather large RV Sales and Service place that appeared to have a drive-thru lane for service. That sounded like exactly what we needed. We pulled off the highway at the next exit and made our way back to the RV place. We inquired about the possibility of getting someone to look at and hopefully fix our little electrical problem this afternoon. The guy looked at his watch, which said 3:00, and asked his colleague if there were any techs available. Fortunately for us there was one tech free so we wheeled in the MoHo for a little service. Contemporaneous to this service taking place, we slipped over to the sales department to check out the new MoHos on their lot. They had TONS of RVs. Everything from little tent trailers all the way up to motorhomes that looked more like buses than MoHos. Of course, we had the sales guy ferrying us around in a golf cart showing us these top-of-the-line models! And I must say, those are some sweet rides. However, the first year of depreciation on one of those alone would far exceed what our MoHo is worth in total. That rather humbling thought helped to keep both my feet on the ground as we toured these fine RVs. When 5:00 rolled around we found that they were successful in finding out what the electrical problem was and had already fixed it. Yessssssss! It turns out that it was a combination of some dodgy wiring at the battery cut-off switch as well as a malfunctioning fuse and fuse holder combination. So the good news was that the parts only added up to $15! But, just to equal things out a bit, the labour charge, at $99/hour, came to almost $200 (US!!!). Well, at least it is fixed and our fridge can now function again while we are driving. While we were shuttling around the RV lot dreaming, we spent much of our time trying to save ourselves from the sweat-inducing temperatures and sun. Welcome to Houston, eh? Even at night it was a relief to step into an air conditioned environment. As I entered the MoHo and felt that welcome air-conditioned air from within caress my face, I paused to think about how I might be feeling in my shorts at this time of night back home … enough said.

Today’s word:

contemporaneous \kuhn-tem-puh-RAY-nee-uhs\, adjective:
Originating, existing, or occurring at the same time.
