Oct 29 – Naval Aviation Museum Reloaded
Oct 29, 2006
The peripatetic lifestyle of the Aylmer Express
MoHo Extravaganza dictates that it is time to move on. We were heading a little further east along the coast today. Since we were going to be passing right by the Naval Aviation Museum again we thought that we might just pop in to check out some of the stuff we didn’t have time to see the first time. Morgan wasn’t as interested so he and Chantal played some tennis while A-P and I perused some of the more modern aircraft and the stories behind them. Time flies by (pun intended) so fast here that the
next thing we knew Chantal and Morgan were finished and had joined us. It was perfect timing as we were just about to try out the F-14 Tomcat simulator. This isn’t just a joyride. You actually get 10 minutes of flight training before climbing into an actual F-14 cockpit replica. It looks like a real F-14 inside, well, to someone who has never been in an F-14 … but I did see one in Top Gun. And it even has
two seats, one behind the other, just like in Top Gun. And it even has a working canopy … just like … well, I think you get the idea. Check out the video I took of the boys getting ready for their mission; they look so official. We were able to watch their progress on a monitor which showed us what they were seeing in the cockpit. The simulator was so realistic it even took into account that the ship is moving so the angled, aircraft carrier
runway drifts slightly to the right as you approach. Very cool. After only a couple of tries A-P managed to land the F-14 on the deck of an aircraft carrier at sea. I knew all that XBOX play would come in handy at some point. The kids had a great time and then it was off to Carrabelle. We made our way past Pensacola and down through Panama City, which is another ultra touristy section making it rather slow going when compared to interstate. We finally arrived but it was already dark. That was primarily due to the fall-back time change. However, coincidentally we also crossed from the central time zone into the eastern time zone today so the two events cancelled each other out from a time change perspective if not from a darkness perspective. The end result was that we didn’t have to change our clocks today which made adjusting to non-Daylight Saving time a breeze.Today’s word:
