Oct 31 – Halloween on the Beach
Oct 31, 2006
I have never been on the beach for Halloween. Actually, I may have been on the beach for Halloween back in 1988 when I was in Australia
however, since they don’t celebrate this holiday down under, I don’t remember where I was on Oct 31. Either way, my goal today was to hang out on the beach. We spent the morning checking out Apalachicola which was just a few miles away. It is a touristy little village but very quaint. For those of you familiar with the Ottawa area, it conjured up memories of Merrickville. The only down side turned out to be my
encounter with the fire ants there. I had my first encounter with these little pests in Carlsbad and I still had welts on my feet a week later. Apparently these ants attack their prey in a
coordinate fashion, according to Ian and Kristi whom we visited in Austin. First they crawl up onto their intended victim and then they somehow communicate with each other so that they all bite at basically the same time. So by the time you feel yourself getting bitten you already have about 10 or 20 bites! I can now confirm that this is indeed the case after going through it twice. I guess I must have stepped on their ant hill while trying to get the proper vantage point for a photo …
what did you expect?!?! So now I can look forward to another week of ichy, inflammed feet. Yeah … Once we made it back to the MoHo we took a short walk to the beach to do a little
reading while basking in the sun in the snow white sand. After having taken care of that item on the todo list (I think I could get used to this lifestyle), we then prepared the kids for this evening’s festivities. As you can see from the photos, the kids headed out into the street qua astronauts in costumes we bought while we were at NASA in Houston. They had a great time as we ferried them around the small town of Carrabelle. They had a whole routine worked out to maximize their candy intake. Morgan would say, “Houston, the Eagle has landed … and we would like to celebrate with some candy.” Then André-Paul would say, “Houston, we have a problem … we need candy.” They were well received and had a pretty good haul, as usual.Today’s word:
