Nov 16 – Raleigh-Ho!

Nov 16, 2006

Yesterday I told you about that truck driving through the campground warning us about a storm. Well, we did get a storm and, fortunately, it was no worse than what they had warned us about. We had high winds with strong gusts and lots of rain but luckily that was all. This morning we had to pack up and we managed to avoid most of the rain. Once we got the car attached we were good to go. After we got underway we heard on the radio that a tornado had ripped through a mobile home park just a few hours north of us in North Carolina! Many of the mobile homes were completely ruined and a number of people lost their lives. When you’re living in an RV and you actually felt the same storm that did this damage, it makes you wonder. Like the aftermath of many storms, we ended up enjoying a beautiful sunny day for our drive giving no indication of the carnage from the night before. We were heading north to Raleigh. It sounds funny to say that because, being from Canada, I always associate Raleigh with being south. Anyway, on our way there I did something that I won’t likely do again on this trip. I filled the gas tank of the MoHo while wearing shorts. I have the distinct feeling that things are going to get decidedly cooler and more inclement as we head home. I did another thing that I don't believe I will do again on this trip. I drove down a stretch of highway labelled the "Jeff Johnson Memorial Highway". Seriously. Unfortunately there was only one sign and we didn't happen to have the camera ready. Oh well. Later in the drive, Chantal and I felt a touch of nostalgia as we drove up through the back roads to our old stomping grounds in Apex. It was a little unusual as well because I don’t think we ever drove into town from this direction before. We got to enjoy a gorgeous sunset on our way. The sun’s reflection off the small lakes which dotted the lush, green, rolling, rural lawns covered in the coloured leaves of autumn, painted a picture perfect scene of serenity. Darkness fell just as we entered Apex so we were denied the chance to clearly see the unbelievable amount of development all around our old neighbourhood. We were heading to our friends’, and former neighbours’, Michael and MaryLou’s place. However, they have moved since we lived there. They only moved to a short distance to a different part of the same neighbourhood so it seemed rather strange to drive past our old house as the GPS directed us onto a street that was only just being built when we lived there. It was good to be back.

Today’s word:

inclement \in-KLEM-uhnt\, adjective:
1. Rough, harsh; extreme, severe -- generally restricted to the elements or weather.
2. Severe, unrelenting; cruel.
